You will work with a passionate and dedicated team that are trying to improve fisheries sustainability globally by providing actionable insight into vessel operations at sea. OceanMind is an independent not-for-profit organisation that empowers enforcement and compliance to protect the world’s fisheries. We provide insights and intelligence into fishing compliance to those who can most effectively use it. We support government authorities and seafood buyers by providing expertise and knowledge paired with advanced technologies to enable responsible sourcing and effective enforcement. We use and develop innovative technology and analysis to track and identify vessels involved in suspicious activities or general activities of interest. We then provide this analysis to the individuals and organisations that need it to make informed decisions and take action. We also work with organizations to develop their internal abilities to conduct analysis and take effective actions with the types of analysis we provide.

You will be responsible to a Senior Analyst. You will use your knowledge of fisheries operations/management and analytical skills to support the production of intelligence reports and risk assessments, especially using tracking and remote sensing data among many other sources. These intelligence reports may involve developing daily patrol recommendations, case notes, or risk assessments as well as support for academic studies or technology reviews related to maritime domain awareness. You will also be asked to conduct desk-based or on the ground research to help partners identify risks and solutions related to diverse problem areas such as policy recommendations, appropriate compliance technologies, and supply chain due diligence processes.

You will also work with developers and other technical experts to enhance system capabilities and with external partners to identify opportunities to further sustainability and maritime rule of law through OceanMind’s areas of expertise. The position comes with significant opportunities for training and growth as you help this new organisation grow and have the greatest global impact possible.

You will also help support many different projects with varying partners and objectives. This support may include translation, arranging the logistics of meetings, and assisting with external communications.

Postings are project funded and maybe permanent or limited term dependent on location & experience.

Main Responsibilities and Activities

• Work to enhance fisheries compliance, and thereby sustainability, through support to governments and seafood buyers.
• Work closely and collaboratively with a dynamic team in a fast-paced environment to high standards.
• Support the analyst team in providing daily monitoring and analysis of selected global maritime areas and fleets of interest to detect and document suspicious and possible suspicious activities.
• Develop close communication and coordination with the external analyst groups and other stakeholders to enhance delivery of analytic tools, information, data and other services.
• Conduct research in matters of maritime and fisheries law and governance.
• Assist in the development of technology requirements and feedback on functionality related to OceanMind systems.
• Develop ideas for and conduct analysis of data sources, methods, or tools that build the team’s ability to enhance fisheries and maritime compliance.
• Conduct project management tasks as required and act as project assistant to facilitate the logistics of OceanMind partner support.
• Assist with business development and business administration activities as requested.
• Advise government and seafood buyers on tools and methods to enhance fisheries compliance and on specific cases and recommend follow-up actions.
• Develop and maintain working relationships with decision makers, government officials and national and international institutions, as well as relevant industry groups and NGOs in the field. Participate in strategy sessions with industry, NGOs, scientists and other stakeholders as needed.
• Represent OceanMind at external meetings, workshops and conferences.
• The role may require significant travel and flexible work schedules.

• A minimum of a bachelor’s degree, but an advanced degree in a relevant area preferred.

• The ability to demonstrate strong analytical skills is required, specifically the ability to synthesize large amounts of information and to focus quickly on the essence of an issue/problem, determine whether it is appropriate for intervention and identify the means to address it.
• Ability to manage your time effectively and work under tight deadlines is required.
• Experience with fisheries intelligence and monitoring, control, and surveillance (MCS), fisheries management or related experience is preferred.
• Experience with fisheries data analysis (e.g. catch and landings data, marine spatial planning, permit and license systems, etc) is preferred.
• Experience with remote sensing (satellite radar, electro-optical, etc) and associated GIS analysis tools, especially QGIS, is preferred but not mandatory.
• Experience with exploring and using different software tools for databases, statistics, GIS, or intelligence analysis is preferred but not mandatory.
• An overarching understanding of industrial fishing operations, supply chains, common fishery management tools, and compliance issues in the fisheries sector and the ability to evaluate specific fisheries or regions in the context of this understanding is preferred.
• Language skills relevant to the location of postings outside the UK are required (Thai fluency for Thailand, etc). Additional languages to English are also preferred for any applicant, especially Thai, Filipino, Spanish, French, or Mandarin Chinese, but this is not mandatory.
• Ability to develop and move projects forward with a high degree of independence and autonomy.
• Excellent written and oral communications skills, including an ease in briefly summarizing the essence of complex issues and means to address them. Strong oral, presentation, facilitation and written communication skills.  Clear, effective writing style.
• Strong interpersonal skills; ability to develop and manage productive relationships with consultants, partners and others who contribute to the development of a project by anticipating possible outcomes.
• Excellent listening skills. Ability to be highly articulate.
• Permitted to work in the United Kingdom, Philippines, Thailand, or Costa Rica.
• Ability to exhibit skills of diplomacy and confidentiality is required.
• Ability to work productively with a wide array of different people and organizations that frequently disagree and have competing interests.
