Pricing basis and volume

Pricing structure

Prices are quoted on an ex-warehouse basis, representing the cost of goods available at the seller’s designated cold storage facility. This structure reflects landed and palletized inventory that is ready for distribution.

Transaction size

All prices are based on less-than-truckload (LTL) volumes, which aligns with typical wholesale seafood transactions and ensures the data reflects realistic trade levels. Prices are stated in $/lb, the standard industry unit for octopus in the U.S. wholesale market.

Hierarchy of data collection for price assessments

Our methodology prioritizes data to ensure accuracy and market reflection:

Terminology and definitions

Key terms

  • Ex-warehouse: International trade (INCO) term where seller makes product available at a designated location (warehouse), and the buyer is responsible for the transportation costs.
  • IQF (Individually Quick Frozen): a freezing method in which each piece of seafood, such as a fillet or shrimp, is frozen individually rather than in a block. IQF preserves each piece's shape, texture, and quality, allowing for easier portioning and minimizing clumping or sticking together.
  • LTL (Less-Than-Truckload): A standard transaction size in the seafood industry, enabling multiple smaller shipments to share transportation costs, which aligns with realistic market values.
  • Flower pack: A style of packing where cleaned octopus are tenderized and shaped to resemble a flower, often through a process involving tumbling, sea salt and cold water, resulting in a tender and visually appealing product.
  • Cleaned: Octopus that has been prepared for consumption by having its internal organs, beak and any other inedible parts removed, leaving only the edible flesh and tentacles ready for cooking and serving
