Scenes from Ecuador’s shrimp farms

Undercurrent News visited shrimp farms in Ecuador during the week of the XV Ecuadorian Aquaculture Conference and Aquaexpo 2013, which ran from Oct. 28 through 31.

During the week, we visited the shrimp farms of top suppliers Omarsa and Songa, as well as mid-sized supplier Crimasa.

Inside the plants, processors work hard to provide products in a range of different forms, from head on/shell on to head off/shell off and everything in between. The plants have had to evolve with a global market that is shifting fast as demand from China and other parts of Asia rockets, challenging processors to shift focus from their traditional focus on the United States.
